Bruce Schneier’s book Liars and Outliers intersects with this material, & so may be of interest. Schneier does a statistical & game-theoretic analysis to figure out what percentage of cheaters in a society is actually stable & how extreme they could reasonably be, ultimately concluding that trust (in strangers, in institutions, etc.) is basically justified because of the strong incentives to get rid of free riders above a certain threshhold before the whole damn thing collapses.
